Lesson (7) Yefren / Zwara / Nalut / Jadu

Lesson Contents

The seventh lesson addresses the topic of numbers in the Amazigh variety. It presents the numbers from one to ten in the forms used in Libya, comparing them with the authentic Amazigh equivalents used in other dialects. The lesson explains that the people of Libya use two original Tamazight numbers, while the rest of the numbers are borrowed from Arabic, though the comparative table notes the existence of original Amazigh equivalents. The lesson also includes an important historical note about the quinary (base-five) numeral system that was used in Mount Nafusa: counting was done from one to five, with "five" expressed by a word meaning "hand." Counting would then continue by adding another "hand" to indicate ten—a unique system in the Mediterranean region.

The lesson also introduces spatial adverbs attached to pronouns—such as: I have (with me), you have (with you), he has (with him), we have (with us)... in their Amazigh forms. It demonstrates how to use these to express possession and verbs of ownership. This section is designed to enable the learner to build functional sentences expressing possession and to link them with numbers and colors. This enhances the student's communicative ability in simple, everyday situations.

In the applied section, the lesson contains a series of graded exercises. These include fill-in-the-blank questions using spatial adverbs, the verb "to be," and the verb "to give," alongside the practical use of numbers and colors in meaningful sentences. It also features translation exercises from Arabic to Tamazight, sentence-building activities, and a word-sorting game (categorizing words into numbers, colors, and verbs). Additionally, there is a communicative game titled "What is this?" aimed at training the student to use numbers and colors in a practical descriptive context. This allows the lesson to successfully integrate lexical, grammatical, and communicative aspects all at once.
